The portfolio
needs to address 5 main areas. Evidence is required for all these areas. A
portfolio approach which requires students to consider several smaller projects
is how we will hit these areas.
The areas are;
1 Investigation
and clarification of the problem
2 DEVELOPMENT
OF A DESIGN PROPOSAL
3 COMMUNICATION
AND MODELLING
4 Making
and Manufacturing
5 EVALUATION
AND TESTING.
To complement and support your first project ( Chess set )
This project
requires you to consider designing
jewellery ,
The items can be
made from pewter and acrylic. Pewter casting is a minimum requirement and lends
itself to designing broaches, pendants, ear rings, rings etc.
Acrylic could be
used IN ADDITION and items similar to the above could be considered . The use
of the laser cutter to cut and also to ETCH is very useful as patterns could be
produced on acrylic. Ideas to consider could also include a bracelet, necklace,
ornament for clothing.
The items should
be packaged in a presentation box.
The items need
to have a note explaining what they are and a logo should be devised which can
then be included on any literature produced.
You will need to
do some research and development work, produce rough and final drawings and an
evaluation. As well as design sketches you will need to make at least two
models / mock ups using card before making your final design.
Think about a specific brief. It could be that your influence is ethnic (relating to a group of people having a common national or cultural tradition ) or it could be a design movement ( Bauhaus, Modernist, art nouveau, Memphis, arts and crafts, art deco, William Morris etc ) or inspiration could come from nature ( Fibonacci , the Golden Mean ).
This minor
project will impact all sections, refer
to your handout.
Good luck
