AS PRODUCT DESIGN

I hope that this helps students’ and parents’ with this fantastic course.

The planning this year has been very tight and we all need to

work very hard to keep on track.

You must be

self disciplined and

organised

to succeed.

 

Outline of dates and titles of work needed to complete coursework.

All work should be completed – no excuses please.

Students will need to prepare for some sections – treat as homework.

ICT is available in several areas around the school including my room ( T2 )

The ICT department also provides access to computers Monday to Thursday evenings.

There will be no excuses entertained for not having the ICT components completed.

I will be available certain evenings to assist in

explaining areas of difficulty – see below.

Sept 3rd

 

First week back and getting ready for the first year

Outline issued. Expectations.

 

Equipment needs ( get these if you have not already )

Get watercolour A3 pad ( 200 gsm min please )

Watercolour set – can be quite basic.

Brush – large NOT hog hair try squirrel or synthetic ( does’nt hold water well ) No 6

Good pencils HB will do ( try a propelling pencil 0.5mm dia – from Adams in Beverley )

Good rubber.

Ruler.

A digital camera or a phone camera will be very helpful especially in year 2.

 

 

Sept 10th

 

Mathematics and the links with design

Prep  Find and record 3 examples – ie sketch 3 leaves / plants on A3 with notes added.

 

Sept 17th

 

Freehand sketching ( review and reinforcement )

Observation drawing, line theory, crating, use of pencil crayon

Prep On A3 sheet complete 4 drawings of your hand each to be different. Shade with pencil and use colour graduated outline.

 

Sept 24th

 

Watercolour techniques.

Washes, mixing, splatter, masking tape, overlay etc.

Prep Produce a watercolour of a ( crated ) drawing of an everyday object.

 

Oct 1st

 

Pen and ink techniques.

Vice drawing exercise. ( Observation drawing )

Prep Draw a lemon squeezer

or similar using pen and ink and employing line theory.

 

Oct 8th

 

Technical drawing

Orthographic drawing with specific reference to dimensioning and lettering.

Technical illustration ( exploded views ) Pencil sharpener or similar.

Prep Produce an exploded view of a film and film canister ( 35mm )

 

Oct 15th

 

Techsoft 2D design

How it can link to Corel Draw

Corel Draw. How this links with the laser cutter.

Nets – from 2D to 3D

Prep CHESS SET design a chess set based on a theme to suit young children aged 8 – 12. Produce an introduction and thence a brief.

Previous AS ideas

 

Prep Gather research for the chess set.

 

Nov 5th

 

Organise CHESS SET work to include initial designs and final design.

Prep complete above.( Is it to be educational )

 

Nov 12th

 

Make mock up models of nets of pieces.

Test models.

Prep    Finalise design of pieces – draw out one set indicating fold and cut lines.

 

Nov 19th

 

Produce a box for the set. It must include illustration, indicating what it is, age range, bar code, CE symbol etc. CAN USE BOX MAKING jig.

Prep – Finish project to be handed in end of next week.

 

Nov 26 th

 

Use the two lessons this week to complete your chess set design.

 

Dec 3rd

 

RING PROJECT

Pewter casting demonstration using cuttlefish.

Link this with corel draw and laser cutter.

Produce introduction and brief regarding designing and making a ring.

Prep  Gather research and analyse the research. Mount pictures onto A3 paper.

 

 

Dec 10th

 

Ring finger sizing template.

Prep  Produce  a sheet of illustrations which show designs suitable for an engraving on a finger ring  insert, ( initials, celtic cross, simple logo etc ).

 

 

Dec 17th

 

Use corel draw to produce a drawing of your chosen design from the previous prep.

Save to personal folder on the school intranet.

Print off designs.
